OUR STORY

Three generations, one bench

The shop moved twice. The workshop behind it has not.

We make it here

Aura opened in 1998 with one bench, one press and a display case borrowed from the shop next door. Ishita’s grandfather had been setting stones on Laxmi Road since 1961; her father took over the bench in 1985 and still sits at it four days a week. Everything sold in the shop is made in the room behind it, by four goldsmiths who have been here between nine and twenty-six years. Nothing is bought in finished. That is slower and it costs more, and it is the only way we can tell you honestly what is inside a piece.

Hallmarked before it reaches the counter

Every gold piece goes to the BIS assay centre before it is priced, not after it is sold. The karat mark, the assay centre mark and our own maker’s mark are stamped where you can see them without a loupe — usually on the clasp or the inside of the shank. If a piece is too delicate to stamp, it carries a tag with the same three marks and we will show you the certificate. Diamonds above 0.30 ct come with an individual certificate from an independent lab, and we hand you the original.
